Question 4 - How did you use media technologies in the construction, research, evaluation and planning stages?

Powered by emaze

This is an Emaze depicting an evaluation of the different bits of hardware we used, including the stages we used them in.

Below is a PowToon regarding the different software we used through the entire creation process, and a review of them.

Question 3 - What have you learned from your audience feedback?

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

When trying to hear our feedback from the audience, we created different things to be able to help us gather all the feedback, one of the first we created was a questionnaire asking questions about the music video, digipak, and website.

Target audience Prezi

We asked many different people about our video once they had watched it the whole way through. We made a questionnaire that was suitable to why. After deciding on our primary, secondary and tertiary audiences. We interviewed a few people asking questions about the music they listen to and similar questions.

We also created two different questionnaires for our audience to answer. We took into consideration the feedback that we got back from the questionnaire both online and on paper and this is what we came back with.

We made many different questionnaires to try and get as much feedback as possible from our target audience. We made another questionnaire on the program fluid surveys that helped us to make a good quality questionnaire to be able to get exact answers from our audience.

Here are some of the answers we received.

When looking at the answers we received from this feedback questionnaire it helped us to see what our audience liked and disliked about our video. As you can see when looking at the feedback from these particular questionnaires many people have gave us a score that shows they liked our music video. Near enough everyone said that they're favorite part was the performance shots of Nick. Some people said they didn't have a least favorite bit in our music video, Other bits that were said as least favorite were the horse shots.

Another way we asked our audience about our music video was by interviewing them. We interviewed one person from our primary secondary and tertiary audience. The questions that were asked were:

How old are you?
What sort of music do you enjoy listening to?
What genre do you think our music video is?
What did you like about our music video?
What do you think we could improve in our video?
What would you rate our music video out of 10?

The criticism that we got from the music video was a lot to do with the constant bike riding. Some people really enjoyed this but others thought it was too much. As some people enjoyed the bike riding we kept this because it went with our choice of song, and went well with the rest of the video.
Other criticism that we got was for the digipak. This was because it had a constant blue color effect throughout it all. As a group we really liked the blue effect as it was something we all decided on. As other people said they liked our colour scheme we decided to keep it.

Overall our feedback gave us a lot of help towards our music video. This made us make the fans happier and make the new music artist come out better because we knew what our target audience were looking for.

Question 2 - How effective is the combination between your main products and your ancillary texts?

How effective is the combination between your main products and your ancillary texts?

bIelieve that we have successfully created a brand for Nicholas Alexander using a combination of posters, album covers, music video and a website. Along with clever use of iconography along with a clear house style which we followed throughout all of our advertisement.

We wanted to make sure that we marketed our artist successfully which we did by the use of the 5 Os to as a base across all our texts. We wanted to show the type of artist Nicholas Alexander is through our products which is why we went for a light blue tint on all of them with white text to show that the music is quite calm but interesting at the same time as blue is a calm colour.

Synergy

It is vital for an up and coming artist to try and make themselves stand out from the crowd because of the massive amounts of competition out there which makes it difficult to break through. Which is why tried to effectively make a highly stylized and synergistic marketing campaign to make a solid and unique brand for Nicholas Alexander so he can be easily recognized and remembered.

I analysed mainstream male artists Ed Sheeran and Ben Howard marketing campaigns as Nicholas Alexander is from the same genre.

How we incorporated synergy into our marketing campaign

Below is a mind map of how our main three areas for marketing use synergy to show our artist image through image and the information on them.

I found it easy to connect the digipack and website as I would use the blue tint and font across both. I was also vital to have nick at the centre of attention across all pages making so everyone knows who he is and adds synergy across all pages.

Social Media

Artists in the music Industry and becoming more reliant on social media to connect with there fans and keep them up to date which is why I thought it vital that we create an Facebook, Twitter and Instagram page. We can use these pages to share our new single, album and website.

   - We used the unedited front cover of the album across all the social media platforms to create memorability and thus synergy between them
-We also inserted links to other social media platforms on each network, but not every network had links to every other network, and in hindsight, I would've included a social media bar on all of her online marketing materials.

Synergy can be established not only through visualisation but through providing the the same information though out your marketing campaign. We was heavily influenced by Ed Sheeran and Ben Howard by the way they set out their album covers using tints and bold white font which has been successful for them so we incorporated into our marketing campaign.

Colour scheme

We chose to have the blue tint across all aspects of our marketing as that was our unique selling point. Blue is often known as a boys colour which is why it is suitable for Nicholas Alexander. We would maybe chance some of the font on the album cover to make it easier to read or tone down the blue a bit to give it a more professional edge.

Iconography

For our iconography we made nick the centre of everything as we thought it important as he is the artist. We also used our locations to make it interesting and unique as well. We decided to do this because its important that everyone knows who nick is and that its not the same every time which is why cool locations make it interesting.

Question 1 - In whats does your media use, develop and challenge conventions of real media products?

Throughout the entire creation process, we studied a wide variety of different music video conventions to aid in the production of our music video. Below is a video of an essay regarding conventions in our video (and a little of our website and digipak).

We also created a Prezi to elaborate more on our website conventions in more detail than the visualised essay.

After we created yet another prezi to expand more upon the website.

The Website Journey - From the drawing board onwards

This a photobucket album that compiles every incarnation of our website, mostly from our homepage designs and finished works but also a few from other areas of the website to demonstrate how it expanded. Similar to our digipak album, one can see the continuous development of our website and undertake the journey we went through to create the final website (which we are extremely proud of).

Looking at the initial sketch of our homepage, it's evident that we always had a solid idea of what we wanted the website to look like. The centrepiece was initially going to be a simple picture of Nicholas Alexander (which made it's way into first basic design on wix) but was soon changed into the album cover as we decided than an artist's main priority is knowledge of the album and spreading it through word of mouth. We decided to reinforce this concept of album knowledge by making it the focal point of the entire website, away from our original design.

Our sketch also encompassed some longer lasting elements of our website, such as the presence of all the pages of the website as a header on the website. The links present in the sketch are extremely reminiscent of the ones in the final design (aside from a few additional pages) demonstrating that this part of the website underwent little change throughout the journey. Furthermore, the sketch also has a twitter feed on the left side, indicating that were always going to integrate social media a large part of the website. We took this idea even further by adding even more social media alongside twitter, such as youtube, facebook and instagram.

Further incremental developments through the website journey demonstrated through the album include the many changing of backgrounds (some because of Thinking Out Loud, some because we had better ideas). We had atleast four different backgrounds before deciding on our final one, encapsulating the struggle we went through it terms of choosing a background that fit Nicholas Alexander's image.

Overall, the website journey was extremely similar to the one undertaken whilst creating our digipak, a very humbling one when looking back at our initial and questionable designs.

The Digipak Journey - From the drawing board onwards

This photobucket album demonstrates the overall progression of the digipak compiled into one easy to access place. From looking through all of the different drafts and plans, one can see the development and the thought that went into it firsthand.

The initial sketch and the CD cover draft emphasised silhouettes to establish Nicholas Alexander's identity. Originally we thought we could get away with this and enforce the identity through other means, but looking through our initial album research we eventually decided this was a rather foolish idea. For a solo artist's debut album, being recognised is a massive aspect of achieving success which a memorable image on almost all of the merchandise.

The second drafts benefited not only from this realisation of identity but also some our original footage from our first shoot. We gathered footage and both photos that day which as one can easily point out, was used to create the second drafts. They also firmly embedded the watery blue colour scheme which found its way into the finished video and the website which personally was a huge success for me as it established a recurring and consistent theme for Nicholas Alexander. However these photos were overall not very professional looking despite being massively better than our very first photos.

The final drafts and complete digipak were the result of our concept footage filming, in which we we gathered some brilliant location shots along with some amazing, almost unbelievable, lighting which we used to its full potential. The photos we took that day included the final album cover (Nick on the bridge) which turned out to be leaps and bounds in quality beyond the previous album cover which was a huge success. Many other location shots found their way into the final digipak and increased the quality massively.

It was very humbling comparing our initial ideas and drafts with the final product, the learning experience and journey was massive throughout the three months and developments and was very enlightening in terms of creating a realistic and believable artist.

Final website designs

The following is a photobucket album compiling screenshots of the completed website, along with a link to the final page below.

This made it easier for when we are making the video and also the lip synching task, charlie also make a timeline for when everyone in the group was free and had the time to be able to work on the video. Nick done the task of finding inspiration and influences from other songs that mad  us want to chose the song that we did. Jack did the task of looking for CD covers and websites that were similar to the artist that we have chose, the Jack went onto making our CD cover.

12.9.14 - Today we had to do out lip synching task. We had to find a good location to be able to film this. Nick also had to start learning the lyrics to the song that we had chosen, then we tried our first shot of lip synching.

15.9.14 - Today we carried on with the lip synching task and finished it. we had to re do some parts of the lip synching task and then this was put onto the computer to edit the song. This was then uploaded onto youtube when finished the lip synching task.

25.9.14 - The idea for the story board was put into paper and made so that we knew what we were filming when we needed it. Also more pictures were taken for the gallery page on the website.

26.9.14 - The website was still being worked on to add more information about the artist. Jack carried on with the album cover and nick was thinking of shots and locations we could use before the ideas change again.

29.9.14 - The interview was finished and edited so that it could be uploaded onto youtube. When the edited it also added on the background as the interview was done on the green screen.

13.10.14 - After having the talk with Pete Fraser on Friday we all took on board the advice that we had been given. we were told to aim for 100 blog posts. This means we needed to put everything we had done or searched onto the blog so that we achieved this amount of posts.

14.10.14 - Today Nick and jack started to film the performance base for our music video. They chose their location and met there after school. The costume was changed so that it looked more like an artist in the music video. All the performance were filmed there and it took 3 hours for the bouts to get each shot.

15.10.14 - The shots that were filmed yesterday at the location of the performance base were downloaded onto the computer so that it could start to be edited. The shots we had films went onto the software premiere. Jack and Nick then added the shots and put them together with the songs that we had chosen. Most of the shots were to fit in well with the songs and worked well with the rest of the shots, however some of the shots weren't the best quality and these would have to be filmed again.

16.10.14 - a lot of things were finished today so that we could add them to the blog. The was so that people could see what we were doing with our music video. We added inspiration onto the blog posts. we also posted videos of previous music videos that we had been made and explained what we liked about the video and what could have been better.

17.10.14 - Today Nick and Jack had to go back tot he location where they filmed the performance so that they could re film a couple of shots that weren't good quality once we had added them into the music video.

19.10.14 - Today we spent our Sunday morning at Tenpin bowling in Chelmsford, we filmed the narrative for our music video here. We went into tenpin before open. We was allowed to do this as one of the group members works there. We had to go in before due to not filming other customers around us. We filmed us playing bowling for a few shots and then again when we were sitting down.

20.10.14 - Today Nick & Jack added in the shots that we had filmed whilst at the bowling alley. They were then edited to fit into the rest of the video. Charlie started to find music videos that were similar to our own to then start to make the steal o matic.

5.11.14 - Today we found out that the digipak Charlie had done for the music video had been taking off of YouTube. we then found out why this way. The song that we had chosen 'thinking out loud' by Ed Sheeren was very popular and number 1 in the charts because of this being so popular we had to change our song because we could no longer go onto film the rest of the thinking out loud video.

6.11.14 - The song that we had come up with when changed was 'i'm no superman' By Lazlo Bane. This song wasnt a popular as the ed sheeren video and also didn't have a music video to it.

18.11.14 - More editing was done by both Jack and Nick. Charlie carried on blogging.

19.11.14 - A lot of blog posts were done today to make sure we had everything done in time. Everything was up to date and anything that needed to be added was done in time.

20.11.14 - Today we had the task of adding more posts to our blog to reach our aim of 100 posts, everyone in the group added to their posts.

21.11.14 - Today we carried on with blog posts and started to talk about pictures that were going to be done for the Photoshoot, such as the location and the clothing.

24.11.14 - Today more pictures were taken for our Photoshoot they were added so that we had better pictures that looks more professional, then they could be added to our Digipak and Website.

28.11.14 - Today we carried on blogging so that we were all at the same stage, Tour posters were edited and Music artist posters were made.

1.12.14 - Today all the group went through the first draft to decide what we can do to improve the video for the final piece, we went through all the edits we could use and different shots that we could add into the video, also shots that we could take out that didn't go as well as we thought.

2.12.14 - Today we started to edit the first draft with the ideas we come up with when talking about it. Other advice was given to us to help us be able to use it within our final piece, Whilst that was being done charlie and nick carried on with blog posts making sure everything was up to date.

3.12.14 - Today Charlie, Jack and Nick all carried on with updating the blog and website, Charlie and jack carried on with the blog posts to make sure everything was up to date. Nick updated the Music artist website with more merchandise and pictures.

4.12.14 - Was another standard day, Nick continued working on the blog and website and Jack on the video. We consulted each other about the direction of the digipak.

5.12.14 - The website was nearing completion on this day, Jack updated the website background in his spare time and added an an extra merchandise page for Nick to complete on Monday. Video progression was solid.

8.12.14 - Jack helped Nick create the first merchandise drafts and Nick subsequently added them to the blog. Charlie-Ann worked on her blog a little and Nick began work on merchandise advertisement.

9.12.14 - Jack finished the second rough draft today which was extremely impressive and was a huge improvement over the first. Editing was better (was cut to the beat more) and the shots looked crisper due to some adept colour correcting.

10.12.14 - Nick finished the merchandise page draft with descriptions added to each of the four items to make it look professional and believable. We received feedback from our teacher on the second draft on ironing out some little mistakes in the video before friday.

11.12.14 - With deadline day tomorrow, the main focus on the day was working on the video. The major issue that revealed itself were a few lighting issues on the exported version and began work to correct this.

12.12.14 - Final draft friday is finally upon us, we finished the project on Premiere in order to finish it up for exportation on Monday. Nick and Jack finalised the website ironing out minor issues today as well.

15.12.14 - Acquired some amazing tips from another class member regarding how to export properly. An example of this showed the exported final piece looking miles better than our previous one and dramatically increased our confidence with the final project.

16.12.14 - Exported the absolute final project and showed it to both our teachers. One pointed out an update in the titles at the beginning of the video, which was swiftly rectified and was a huge improvement.

17.12.14 - Created some photo bucket albums to demonstrate the journey of our development for the website and digipak, which Miss said was almost mandatory for a good blog.

Social Media progression

Our social media pages have come a long way from their initial inception. Our photoshoots have provided us with brilliant material for them. For example, looking back at the original twitter page which had some extremely basic photos demonstrates how far the pages have come in terms of being professional and realistic.

Nicholas Alexander - On the Front Cover

This is a magazine cover for in which Nicholas Alexander is on the cover, created brilliantly by Jack in Adobe Photoshop. We acquired a lot of inspiration while creating this by looking at different magazine covers which artists such as Ed Sheeran and Miles Kane. The finished magazine cover looks astounding and extremely professional, almost on the level of a real magazine cover which is simply exceptional. The creation of this further reinforces Nicholas Alexander's identity as a prominent singer-songwriter.

Merchandise - third and final draft

This is some of the merchandise updated and refined to it is up to standard with the rest of the merchandise for use on the website and digipak. A stellar effort from Jack on his part which deserves congratulation.

Editing screenshots

This is an example of how the rough cut looked in the editing software we are using to create the final product, Adobe Premiere CS6. This screenshot depicts myself and Jack taking teacher and peer feedback to improve the video and make it a proper, A-Grade piece of work. Also we are using two layers of footage as one is concept which is always being changed and replaced within the performance as we experiment with different shots to see what looks best.

We are now in the final stages of our production and should be finished within the next week with one more re-shoot scheduled for this saturday.

Rough draft peer assessment

These are a few select examples of the feedback we received when our classroom peers watched and evaluating our video and marked it as if they were examiners. We averaged a mark from all of the feedback which turned out be 31, which we were extremely happy with as it still was just a rough cut and there were many aspects which need following.

A summary of the feedback we received includes -

  • Some of the lighting turned out extremely bad in a few shots which really brings the entire video down.
  • Some shots are a little wobbly which stick out like a sore thumb.
  • There is a bit too much cycling and it gets boring fast.
  • The overall quality of the song is quite bad and severely detracts from the experience.

Rough Cut Version two

This is the second version of our rough cut taking in the initial feedback from our teacher mainly. We will soon receive more feedback from our teacher and peers shortly.

Finished digipak - with improvements

Full Digipak - Improvements

 Old Digipak

New Digipak

I listened to the peer feedback and made the improvements that the group agreed on. We decided to scrap the top left lyric list as we already had the songs listed on a different page and replaced it with a thank you page and included a new picture from our photo shoot which was better quality. A majority of our feedback told us to change the CD and go with something more basic and not have a picture of Nick on the CD which I listened to and changed. I also changed the black and white pictures on the back of the CD as this was also brought up in our feedback and also replaced them with better quality photos. I also made the bar code and production company logo transparent to increase the professional look. I then got rid of the urban jungle font and changed it to Ebrima which is more simple and because Nicholas Alexander isn't a urban/unusual artist. Overall these changes have improved our digipak dramatically and increase the professionalism of the CD.

Digipak peer feedback

This is all of the feedback regarding our digipak. Overall it was positive but there was some things that needed updating which we have already begun editing.

Its quite an aesthetically pleasing digipak to look at, nice poses :) the white bit behind the track names is a bit of an eyesore. But overall the text, theme and colour creates a mood and goes with the genre.

There is a very clear blue theme throughtout all of the pictures. 4 of the pictures (sides) are all really professional. The top left box is the worst one has it does not continue the theme and does look professional.

Nicholas Alexanders digipacks images are very proffesional they look great. Especially the CD cover this design is very creative. Im a bit confused about the blue tint colour and the random triangle shape.
12/2/2014 11:19 AM View respondent's answers
Good that they have kept the same colour theme throughout the digipack. Could be improved by moving the image on the CD as having the hole in that area doesnt work.

When looking at nicholas alexander digipak the colours are different most people have used black and white but the blue colour works well. Images work well with the rest of the digipak as well as the fonts and text.
12/1/2014 3:09 PM View respondent's answers
Love the colour scheme, font and layout! I'd say it's pretty much there, just make the bar code and credits transparent so that that white box isn't there :)
12/1/2014 2:58 PM View respondent's answers
This was probably my favorite. I really like how there is a clear theme throughout, and the colours look great together. Good pictures and everything is layed out well. Could maybe have text on the disc.
12/1/2014 1:54 PM View respondent's answers
I like the use of colour but the pictures look too heavily edited and this makes the images look quite unprofessional. The images with a blue tint is nice but the tint is slightly too bright which makes the pictures look low quality.
12/1/2014 12:34 PM View respondent's answers
i dont see anything wrong with the digipack, i like the fact it has a colour scheme abd sticks to the theme.
12/1/2014 12:26 PM View respondent's answers
The all one colour looks good although just the picture of the lake is quite boring.
12/1/2014 12:13 PM View respondent's answers
i like the blue effect they have over the whole thing i think the black and white pictures should be changed to blue as they don't go
12/1/2014 11:48 AM View respondent's answers
The blue looks odd/not realistic/not right All photos are good Not clear on genre
12/1/2014 11:46 AM View respondent's answers
Could do with Less heavy-handed filters, more subtle and effective
11/30/2014 8:50 PM View respondent's answers
i like the bright blue - very eye-catching and well-executed throughout. there are two tracklists on the digipak and in two different orders which is confusing. i also like the use of shapes - circle, triangle and squares. clean-cut and modern.

I like the blue theme throughout - the back album cover where the tracks are listed is especially good and effective. Improvements: the CD is a bit strange, it looks like its trying to be a bit of a joke where the hole is cut out rather than a professional digipak

Tour dates poster

This is the tour date poster that Charlie-Ann created for use in the website. It is far better than our original tour date posters as it actually establishes Nicholas Alexander's identity and will find a brilliant place in the website.

Website peer feedback

1
What Went Well - a good amount of pages with a good amount of information. Keeping with the conventions of what Nicholas Alexander is about
Even Better If - the background was changed to something more professional. Also, the pictures on the tour page aren't of Nicholas Alexander, bit confusing?!

2
Nicholas Alexander: A good website throughout, the pages have a lot of information and include
what fans wish to know. All social media links work well and take you to the appropriate page so that fans can go directly to the social media account and know it’s the official page. This website would be even better if in the gallery page the images looked a bit more professional... Maybe do a professional photo shoot with the star dressed up in a professional setting? Also, the image on the home page of 'Nicholas and his manager' the green doesn't look very appealing. Maybe use the green screen effect on premier.
· Links to social media are cool
· Quite boring
· No info about the band

Nicholas Alexander: What Went Well - A good amount of pages with a good amount of information. Keeping with the conventions of what Nicholas Alexander is about. Good colour scheme and conventions throughout.
Even Better If - The text is a bit unprofessional? Change wording to improve.

4
Nicholas Alexander: What Went Well - The colour scheme and look fits the artist's genre. I love the pictures of Nick used and his bio is very in-depth.
Even Better If - Grammatical errors need to be fixed on the homepage. Pictures of other artists should be removed from the 'Tour Dates' page.

5
NA - The website as a whole is very good and well thought out however I feel that a little more work could have been taken into the photographs. In my opinion I feel that they should retake the photo shoot pictures and get someone who is able to take photos. Unfortunately they are all out of focus and are not clear in the slightest therefor this takes away from the professionalism of the page. I like how they have conducted interviews and looked into the more business side of the music industry including booking and things to do with his manager. They do not seem to have any merchandise at all on the site. I feel that this would be a good idea for them because it will make their site more appealing to fans that want to buy their merchandise to wear at their concert.

What Went Well: Has a smooth flow, really informative and easy to navigate around the site, Matches genre.

Even Better If: The pictures need to be more professional looking, maybe get more interesting pictures. Some of them are too grainy. I guess you can't change this because it's the album cover but the background hurts my eyes. Need to keep the font the same.

Score: 7/10

What Went Well: Flows nicely, nice use of colour, pages are well filled out with text and information. Nice text used as well.
Even Better If: On the 'Tour Dates' page the text is all different fonts, needs to keep to the house style! The images on the website need finishing rather than just using the green screen background. Loads of grammatical mistakes as-well! Picture on the bio page is really fuzzy. The little welcome message was removed.

The group have made a great start on the website but some things still need to be added such as more professional photos and some of the text needs to be looked over as there are mistakes and also the font tends to change. This would make the website look sloppy but this can all be changed easily just by looking over the website and checking. I think that there is a lot of good content and will end up being a very good website.

What went well - the background of the homepage has lovely, striking colours. The homepage includes current news about Nicholas. The 'first noticed' video on the 'about' page is a very good and clever idea.
Even better if - there are some grammar errors that could be fixed on the 'about' page. On the 'tour' page there are pictures of other artists which need to be deleted.

What went well: I really enjoy this website. It has a good neutral background and I like the way they have put their interviews on there. They haven’t put to many pictures onto the website which is good otherwise you get overloaded with things. I also like the way that they have a picture on there with their manager because this is an important part of the group which isn’t always mentioned in the fame.

Even better If: The only thing that I would change is the where in the background you cannot see the full name of the artist Nicholas Alexander because it is cut off from the screen.

The website gives a clear description as to whom Nicholas Alexander is and what he represents, we see a Bio of who he is and this allows new fans to relate to the artist. We are also linked to sites where we can listen to more of the artist, iTunes sound cloud and YouTube for example. There is no merchandise on the website which means a lack of investment in the website from fans outside the purchase of tickets. Also for a new artist the tour seems very limited and non-available to the majority of the country.

What I like about this website is the layout that they have used. The background I think looks great and the home page of the website is a real strength, the album front cover and also Nicholas Alexander's interview with BBC Radio 1. The areas that could be improved are some of the photos in the gallery, they don't seem to be the best quality, and maybe there could be a bit more information about the artist. However they have good links to twitter, Instagram etc., so overall I think the website is looking good

Teacher feedback

Today I went back through the rough cut with my teacher to get even more feedback and  to make I was aware to all the minor issues as well as the more obvious ones. Here is the list of things we picked out:

- 00:409 Pan too fast
- Buy the Song as this is poor quality
- Correct shot 00:34-00:35 as shot does not fit
-Shot 00:57
- Cycling too fast
- remove tree shot
- 1:48 cycling shot wobbly
- Increase length of bridge shot
- Stabilize grass shot 1:59
- 2:05 Biking shot
- 2:10 remove bridge dip
- 2:25 remove cycling  shot
- 2:51 Out of sync

I will improve all the problems listed plus the ones from my class mate list for a 2nd rough cut for this Friday so that I can receive more feedback next week.

Merchandise - second draft

Phone Case one

 Phone Case 2

Shopping Bag

Mug

On our 1st draft of our merchandise there was a few products I wasn't happy with completely. I have recreated the products so they can go onto the website now so they look more professional and detailed which is what I was aiming for when I made them.
